Monstera deliciosa 'Bulbasaur'

Monstera deliciosa 'Bulbasaur' is a rare variegated Monstera known for camouflage-like foliage in shades of mint, cream, medium green, and deep green. Instead of the large white sections seen on an Albo, 'Bulbasaur' develops layers of speckling, marbling, and splashed variegation across the leaf.

As the plant matures, healthy leaves can grow larger and develop the familiar splits and interior openings called fenestrations. Each new leaf is a bit of a surprise—the amount and pattern of variegation will naturally change from leaf to leaf.

Variegation note: Variegated plants require more light than solid-green Monsteras, but their lighter areas are also more susceptible to scorching. Exact coloration, marbling, and future variegation cannot be guaranteed.

CARE AT A GLANCE

Light: Bright, indirect light. Protect the leaves from intense afternoon sun.

Water: Water thoroughly when the upper portion of the potting mix begins to dry and the pot feels lighter. Allow excess water to drain.

Potting mix: Use a chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, and dependable drainage.

Humidity: Average household humidity is usually adequate, although moderate humidity supports better foliage. Good airflow remains important.

Temperature: Keep warm and away from cold windows, drafts, and sudden temperature changes.

Support: Provide a moss pole, plank, or sturdy support as the plant grows to encourage larger, more mature leaves.

Care level: Moderate.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What is Monstera 'Bulbasaur'?

Monstera 'Bulbasaur' is a variegated form of Monstera deliciosa. It is recognized by its mottled, camouflage-like mixture of mint, cream, and multiple shades of green.

How is Monstera 'Bulbasaur' different from Monstera Albo?

Monstera Albo commonly develops bold white sections or patches. 'Bulbasaur' generally has a more blended, speckled pattern with several shades of green, mint, and cream rather than sharply divided white variegation.

Will Monstera 'Bulbasaur' develop split leaves?

Yes. With maturity, bright filtered light, healthy roots, and climbing support, it can develop the characteristic splits and interior fenestrations of Monstera deliciosa. Young plants normally begin with solid leaves.

Will every new leaf have the same variegation?

No. Variegation varies naturally from leaf to leaf. Light levels, plant maturity, and genetics all influence its appearance. One highly variegated leaf does not guarantee that the next leaf will look the same.

Does Monstera 'Bulbasaur' need a moss pole?

A pole is not required for survival, but climbing support helps the plant grow upward and produce larger, more mature foliage.

How often should Monstera 'Bulbasaur' be watered?

Do not water by the calendar. Check the potting mix and the weight of the pot. Water when the upper portion has begun to dry, then allow the excess to drain completely. Yellowing leaves and persistently wet soil may indicate overwatering or poor drainage.
